This handbook of some of the early citywide Baan Mankong upgrading projects in 14 cities, was prepared in October 2005.

This article, by Somsook Boonyabancha, was published in the April 2005 issue of IIED's Environment & Urbanization Journal. The articles in this issue of the E&U Journal were devoted to "Meeting the Millennium Development Goals in urban areas." Besides managing ACHR, Somsook was the director of the Community Organizations Development Institute (CODI) at the time of writing this article.

In September 2004, CODI organized a national seminar on "Community-driven welfare: solving poverty at the roots." The two-day seminar gave community leaders from all over Thailand an opportunity to reflect on the community welfare activities already going on in urban and rural communities, and to find ways to deepen and broaden the community welfare movement. This paper presents some thoughts on the seminar, by CODI's director, Somsook Boonyabancha.
