July 03, 2014
Arkom Yogyakarta, Indonesia, hosted the Community Architects Network core team meeting June 28 - July 1 2014.  Plans were set in place for future activities over the next 3 years, including widespread community mapping, participatory planning and city-wide upgrading.  We’ll post a summary of the outcomes soon.

The Community Architects Network (CAN) has been operating for the past 4 years, expanding to 27 active groups working on urban poor projects and processes in 19 countries in Asia.  It has conducted 30 workshops in 12 countries up to 2013 and been active in publishing manuals and participatory guides. CAN is also promoting student involvement and curriculum change at faculty level in many universities.

While national and city level CAN teams are working with communities on upgrading urban poor projects, CAN has also conducted “regional activity over the past 12 months which include activities in Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia and Indonesia. In regional activity in the past 12 months CAN has worked in 27 communities, with 41 community architects and YPs involved in workshops and meetings, with  57 students involved in 4 workshops, 118 community members were working and helping organize the workshops, in which 10 university, 11 NGOs and 9 governments participated.

A video by Arkom Jogjakarta captures the spirit of the CAN CORE team meeting over the 3 days: community and cultural field visits, reflections on the work of CAN and planning for the next 3 years, in an atmosphere of relaxed “vippassana” meditation lead by Nad and embraced by all. Thanks to Em and his team for his great camera work, editing and craftsmanship.
